Route 1 overpass work to slow South Portland traffic

Here’s the latest from the Maine Department of Transportation, which warns South Portland drivers to be aware of detours in place starting Monday, when traffic will be rerouted away from a Route 1 overpass in the area of Lincoln Street.

The full MDOT announcement is here:

Crews will be removing the Route 1 overpass in the vicinity of Lincoln Street in South Portland starting on January 10th at 8:30 a.m. through 6 a.m. on January 12th. Traffic will be detoured from Route 1 (Main Street) utilizing Lincoln Street and Main Street. The detour will be in effect for 45.5 continuous hours with local police and flaggers helping to guide traffic through the detour.

Residents and businesses in the area will experience the normal construction noise of trucks and equipment through the day and night, but a hydraulic hammer used to remove the concrete deck will not be allowed to operate between the hours of 9 p.m. and 7 a.m.

This work is being performed by Shaw Brothers Construction, Inc. of Gorham.
