Brennan, ‘ready to get started,’ schedules inaugural address for Monday night

The city of Portland today released details of a busy Monday, during which elected city and school officials will be sworn in and Mayor-elect Michael Brennan (BDN photo above by Robert Bukaty) will deliver his first public address.

As in the tradition of past years, Brennan and re-elected city councilors Cheryl Leeman and John Coyne will be officially sworn in at noon at City Hall Monday. Elizabeth Holton, Justin Costa and Marnie Morrione, picked by voters on Nov. 8 to serve on the Portland School Board, will be sworn in at City Hall at 4 p.m.

The new part of all this — in addition to the fact that Brennan is the first popularly elected mayor since 1923 — is that there will then be a 6 p.m. public reception at the Ocean Gateway International Marine Terminal, where Brennan will deliver his first speech as mayor of Maine’s largest city.

Here’s a statement issued today by Brennan through the city:

As Portland’s first elected Mayor in nearly a century, I recognize the incredible opportunity I have been presented and I take that responsibility to heart. I am committed to living up to the expectations the residents and businesses of Portland have for this office. Portland has been my home for three decades and I am anxious to give back to a community that has given me so much. Whether it’s creating jobs, spurring new economic activity, enhancing the quality of the Portland Public Schools or making City Hall more responsive to the needs of the community, I am ready to roll up my sleeves and get started.
